 THE PROJECT

Multigenerations Have Been

Impacted by the

1945 Manhattan Project

Within New Mexico

And Globally

THE PROJECT

The Impact of the Manhattan Project within Taos County New Mexico

"Woe unto the world because of offenses: for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense commeth." Lincoln (Second Inaugural Address).

The atomic bomb which was produced here in New Mexico was potent and consequential. Radioactive colonialism and environmental destruction took place here with harmful effects of uranium mining, led by the government during the cold war. The genie has been let out of the bottle, and can never be put back in.

Man has made offenses against all humanity and Mother Nature. We must find a way to correct the injustice that we have created. In the Declaration of Independence Jefferson says, "We hold these truths to be self- evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Human lives have been sacrificed and Mother Earth will no longer sustain life if we continue down this path.

Knowledge is awareness and According to Emerson "Man is his own star: and the soul that can render an honest and perfect man, commands all light, all influence all fate; nothing to him falls early or too late." 1(Self Reliance first series). Wisdom is the courage to question the authorities.

Thoreau said "You must live within yourself." 9 (Civil Disobedience Ln. 29). Our moral obligation is non-cooperation with evil. Exposing the truths of death and destruction and the consequences suffered by the indigenous people and now residents of earth. Lands were stolen and humans were exposed to the yellowish rock. We Natives and New Mexicans have been lied to over and over.

As a result from atmospheric fallout, soil, and water contamination this battle of nuclearism will defeat life unless we defeat nuclear radiation. "Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated can long endure." (Gettysburg Address Ln. 4)

THE HARD TRUTH

Radon

What is Radon?

Radon is a natural radioactive gas. You cannot see, hear, feel or taste it. It comes from the minute amounts of uranium that occur naturally in all rocks and soils. Radon is present in all parts of Taos County, although the gas disperses outdoors so levels are generally very low.

We all breathe it in throughout our lives - for most residents of New Mexico, radon accounts for half of their total annual radiation dosage.

However, geological conditions in certain areas can lead to higher than average levels. Some of the highest radon levels are found in areas where the local geology includes granite. Levels well above average for New Mexico have been found in most parts of Taos County

Long-term exposure to particularly high levels of radon may increase the risk of developing lung cancer, which is also increased if you smoke.
